Bud Withers of The Seattle Times reports that Wulff is gone and former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is the leading candidate to replace him.
My argument for Wulff...
First off, I think the Cougs have shown definite improvement this year without our best player Jeff Tuel. While improvement to 4-8 is mediocre at best, I don't think you fire Wulff without a legit candidate to replace him. Bill Moos must feel that a top tier candidate will come to Pullman over potential ASU and UCLA if they do fire their coaches as well (as well as schools outside the Pac-12).
Second, next year we have a legitimate shot at 8 wins, not including a bowl win with Wulff as head coach.
Third, I think if you do retain Wulff you need to give him at least a 2 year extension back-loaded with incentives.
Fourth, if Moos keeps Wulff as head coach he needs to make defensive coaching changes, because the D isn't getting it done.
Fifth, Wulff is a Coug, loves the school, the town & everything that accompanies it. He will not use Wazzu as a stepping stone.
Against Wulff...or in support of Leach
First, I've always been obsessed with Mike Leach and his offenses, so of course I want him which shows I'm a little bias.
Second, if you are guaranteed to get Mike Leach, I say you do it. In ten years at Texas Tech he went 84-43 with a winning season every year.
Third, Texas Tech was a small school in a rural area very similar to Wazzu, he is from Wyoming so Pullman life may suit him very well.
Fourth, Wulff is 9-40 in four years at Wazzu. Oregon won its 10th game this year. That's right 10 wins in one year and it's going to take us over 4 years to get to ten. No matter how you slice it, that's pathetic.
Fifth, Leach runs a spread offense, which is what Wazzu runs as well so the transition of the offense would be much easier than to a coach who runs the pro-style for example.
Honestly, either way I'm torn. I've never wanted a sports figure to be successful as much as I do Wulff. At the same time it's hard to be so patient for even a return to mediocrity. I only think you fire Wulff if he changes some defensive coaches and Moos does not have a guarantee from a top-tier coach. I don't want another small school coach, I want some controversy, I want someone to know who my head coach is. In the end I just want whoever we have to be successful. Go Cougs
